Terang Public Art Project
Glen Manning and Kathy Daly
‘Leaves in the Breeze’, 2014
Material – Corten Steel
Location – The Avenue near Shadforth Street
Terang’s public art Leaves in the Breeze is a 2.1-metre-high sculpture that pays tribute to the 130-year-old oaks that line the town's avenue.
The sculpture features three ‘floating’ curled oak leaves constructed from corten steel and bolted into concrete footings in the centre of Terang’s avenue near Shadforth Street.
Sculptors Glen Manning and Kathy Daly brought the project to life.
“Lots of places have avenues, but the extent of planting in Terang was impressive and that really stood out to us,” Mr Manning said.
The artists visited Terang to develop concepts for the piece.
“It was a windy summer’s day and we were reminded of the advice contained in the brief for the project, explaining that the wind is a strong element in the landscape," Mr Manning said.
"There were oak leaves blowing in the wind and that grabbed our attention."
Mr Manning was one of the first artists in Australia to work with corten steel as an exterior application for public art projects.
“Corten is a material we work with quite a lot because it has a natural appeal and it’s got a longevity that’s required,” he said.
“Our artwork always has some sort of dialogue or conversation with the landscape it’s in and our point of reference was the avenue of oaks, so the corten tied in nicely.”
