Bees are fundamental to food and biodiversity for their role in pollination. You can support bees in the following ways:

Plant a variety of plants

Planting a variety of flowering plants can attract and support bees, try planting these to attract bees:

  • Banksia
  • Grevillea
  • Rosemary
  • Eucalyptus
  • Red Flowering Gum
  • Daisies
  • Lavender
  • Basil

Avoid using pesticides

Bees collect pollen and nectar from flowers, because of this, using pesticides on plants can harm bees. Instead of using pesticides, use a net or barrier or use a natural alternative.

Bee hotels

Bee hotels can provide a home for native bees. Create a bee hotel by drilling holes into either wood such as tantana canes, bamboo or timber, or clay blocks for the bees to nest in.

Beekeeping

Keeping bees is a rewarding yet time consuming effort. Honey has a variety of health benefits, the act of looking after bees can improve mental health and wellbeing, bees can be great education for children, and of course you are supporting the environment through pollination. If bee keeping is something you are interested in, make sure to research about bees and see if this would be something you can commit to.
