Shopping consciously can reduce waste and help you buy items that support local businesses.

  • Op Shops: Choose second hand over new, you may be able to find a good deal or something special.
  • Libraries: Utilise the library to borrow books and digital resources https://www.corangamite.vic.gov.au/Places-and-Events/Libraries
  • Toy Libraries: Visit your community toy library to borrow toys for children aged 6 months to 6 years.
  • Shop local: Buying local means that your money goes back to local businesses and community, supporting the local economy and boosting employment.
  • Quality over quantity: Buy items that are good quality, can be used for multiple purposes, and can be recycled at their end of life. Buying good quality items not only reduces waste but reduces costs as you will have to buy these items less frequently.
  • Packaging: Choose items that have less packaging to reduce the amount of waste you are producing.
  • Promote animal welfare: Consider the welfare of animals throughout their lives when buying animal products or items that could be tested on animals.
  • Promote workers: Consider the workplace conditions of the staff who produced the items, buying fairtrade encourages fair wages and a safe working environment.
