Young people invited to learn dance, karate at Skipton Rising

Whether they want to dance like Tate McRae or Bruno Mars, or fight like Jason Statham or Gal Gadot, young Corangamite residents can put their best foot forward at Skipton Rising.
People aged 10 to 21 years can get a taste of dance and karate at the Mechanics Institute Community Hall on Tuesday 29 September.
Corangamite Shire Mayor Kate Makin said Alice Corneby, from Jammin Studio in Camperdown, will lead a dance workshop from 10.30 am until 12.30 pm.
“Alice is an experienced dance and acro teacher. She will perform and lead workshops in various dance styles, including hip hop and acro,” Cr Makin said.
Ms Corneby said her session would be “a really fun, high energy couple of hours”.
“We’ll turn the music up, learn some routines, try some acro tricks and work on a few cool skills that you might even be able to pull out next time you’re on the dance floor!
“It's absolutely for everyone. You don’t need any experience at all. It’s about having a go, learning something new and hopefully surprising yourself with what you can do.
“Dance and acro are such great ways to build confidence without even really thinking about it.
“You’re moving, learning new things, meeting people and just having fun.
“Bring a friend or two along and make it even more fun, the more the merrier!”
After a free barbecue cooked by the Skipton Good Friday Appeal committee, Master Instructor Peter Conroy from the Camperdown Traditional Karate Club will introduce attendees to the Japanese martial art from 1.30-3.30 pm.
“Peter Conroy has 40 years of karate training, competition and development experience with about 30 years as an instructor.
Mr Conroy said participants could expect “a fun, high-energy introduction to traditional karate — learning some basic techniques, movement and self-defence skills.”
“Karate develops focus, discipline, confidence and practical karate skills — while learning to work with others and challenge yourself.”
“Traditional Karate is really the modern solution to so many challenges faced by people of today.
“Come along and build confidence, improve fitness and coordination, develop self-discipline and learn skills that can be used both inside and outside the dojo.”
Cr Makin said no experience is necessary for the workshops.
“This is a fun day to learn skills and make new friends in an inclusive environment. All abilities welcome.
“Bookings are essential at events.humanitix.com/skipton-rising.”
The event is supported by Corangamite Shire Youth Services and the Victorian Government.
