There will be fewer kerbside waste collection trucks on Corangamite Shire roads as new split-compartment vehicles collect glass and recycling bins at the same time.

Manager Environment and Emergency Belinda Bennett said Council is taking another step forward in sustainability by trialling new split compartment waste trucks with contractor Wheelie Waste

“The trial will begin on 1 November and be in place until the end of the year. The trucks will collect and separate glass and recycling at the same time to improve efficiency of collections.

“The split trucks are clearly marked so if you see a truck collecting glass and recycling bins at the same time, don’t be worried that recycling or glass will wind up in landfill.

“These trucks are designed to collect two different collection materials but keep them completely separate.

“The trucks have two separate compartments and the driver can control a flap to direct the bin contents to the right compartment. This means we can collect two bins at once without contamination.

“Each compartment can then be emptied appropriately at the correct facility, with recycling going to a materials recovery facility, and glass going to a separate recycling facility.”

Using split trucks to collect two waste streams simultaneously mean fewer trucks on the road, less emissions and reduced wear on road surfaces.

Council is committed to reducing waste to landfill, improving the recovery of recyclables and reducing litter across the Shire.
