Mayor’s message to young leaders: don’t be afraid to speak up

Young people from across Corangamite Shire took part in the annual Youth Summit on Tuesday 8 September.

Presenters from Youth Leadership Academy of Australia inspired Year 7-12 students to empower and inspire positive change in their communities.

The day focussed on three topics:

Self Leadership: Participants examined their style of leadership and what it means to lead themselves before others. They examine their roles within their community and how they can step into their leadership.

Implementing Leadership in my school and community: Through hands-on activities, participants explored hard and soft skills necessary for effective leadership within their community.

Student-Led Initiatives: Focusing on the big issues in their community, the emerging leaders learnt a step-by-step process of how to break down big issues into smaller ones to start creating real change and making a positive impact.

Mayor Kate Makin welcomed the participants to a space where they could explore what kind of leader they are; their strengths, values, and how they can contribute.

Cr Makin said the theme, Your Voice, Our Future, was “exactly the right message” because the students’ voices and ideas matter.

“The things you notice in your schools, your towns, your clubs and your communities are important. You see things from a perspective that adults do not always see, and we need to listen to that.

“Leadership is not about being the loudest person in the room, or having a badge, or knowing the answer to every question.

“It is having a go. It is looking out for others. It is asking, “How could this be better?” and then being brave enough to take the first step.”

“Keep using your voice. Share your ideas. Listen to each other. Be respectful, but do not be afraid to speak up about the things that matter to you.”
