Grass slashing is underway across Corangamite Shire and a second round of roadside slashing will start in coming weeks.

Manager Works Lyall Bond said the second round of road shoulder slashing had been delayed by wet weather but would start as soon as the ground was dry enough and the contractors are back in the area.

“People would have seen slashers around the outskirts of towns, on nature strips and on designated unmade roads over recent weeks,” Mr Bond said.

“We expect the second round of roadside slashing will start just before Christmas.”

Council’s Rural Road Management uses a combination of slashing and spraying to reduce grass levels and fire risks on road shoulders.

“Vegetation reduction activities can’t be applied uniformly across all Council-managed roads due to different conditions in different parts of the Shire, uneven terrain or steep roadside drains making slashing unsafe or impossible,” Mr Bond said.

“Council sprays 2,460 km and slashes 1,192 km of roadsides at least twice each year, depending on growing conditions.

“Shoulder spraying for weeds has been done this year and the regular spot spraying around roadside furniture − guideposts, signs, culverts and bridges – will also be finished by Christmas.”
