Free green waste disposal to help prepare for fire season
Published on 05 October 2026
With an early start to the fire season being predicted, Corangamite Shire Council is encouraging residents to start cleaning up flammable vegetation around their properties.
Council Emergency & Local Laws Coordinator Greg Partridge said recent rain and warm conditions had led to grass growth, resulting in increased fuel loads.
“Now is the time to reduce fuel loads by managing grass growth and cleaning up bark, twigs, leaves and other organic matter around your property,” he said.
“Corangamite Shire residents can drop off their domestic green waste for free at Corangamite transfer stations from Monday 12 until Sunday 25 October. That doesn’t include commercial customers.
“Kerbside green bin collections have also been doubled to weekly instead of fortnightly, until the end of the year.
“Preparing your properties and having a fire plan can make a big difference in an emergency.”
Mr Partridge recommended residents
- clear out guttering
- mow long grass
- cut back shrubbery
- get rid of dry leaves twigs and bark, including under steps and decks
- prune branches near buildings or ground vegetation
“Normally a heaped trailer or ute load of green waste would cost $43.70 you to drop off of, so this is a great chance to save money.”
Mr Partridge said now is the best time to understand your fire risk and get prepared, not when a fire starts.
