Free fishing workshop for all abilities

Social connection, wellbeing and fun will be on the line this October at a free all-abilities fishing experience at Lake Bullen Merri’s South Beach.
There are only 10 places, so Corangamite Shire Council is encouraging community members aged 55 and over, and people living with disability, to register now.
Positive Ageing Access and Inclusion Reference Group Chair Cr Jo Beard said fishing is one of the most popular pastimes in Australia.
“It’s a great way to get out in nature and keep active, without being too physically demanding,” Cr Beard said.
“All fishing equipment and a light lunch will be provided, but bring a hat, sunscreen and a drink.
“The site is accessible thanks to the new wheelchair friendly walkway installed last month by the Friends of South Beach Committee, and there is a scooter recharging point at the picnic shelter.
“Fishability staff and volunteers will be on hand to guide participants in a safe and supportive environment, so no previous fishing experience is required.
“They will share information about responsible fishing practices, regulations and caring for local fish populations.”
Fishability is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to helping people living with disability enjoy recreational fishing.
It is a division of Fishcare Victoria – a community-based not-for-profit organisation that promotes responsible fishing and that helps protect fish stocks for future generations.
Council Coordinator Positive Ageing, Access And Inclusion Belinda Rowbottom said the event would give people of all abilities the opportunity to learn new skills and make new friends.
“The event is being held during the Victorian Seniors Festival which is an opportunity for an intergenerational event.
“Along with the 10 places available for seniors or community members with accessible needs, 10 students from Hampden P-12 will take part.
“Engaging in activities with younger generations can keep older residents young at heart and stimulate their minds with dynamic social engagement and fresh conversation topics.
“They can share their life experiences with the younger people who, in return, keep them in touch with how the world is changing. And, of course, it’s a chance to have a laugh.”
