Corangamite Shire Council is looking for feedback on domestic animal issues across the community.

Mayor Kate Makin said animals - from working dogs to companion cats - play a big part in many people’s lives but they need to be cared for.

“We’re seeking feedback regarding domestic animal concerns in Corangamite Shire for the Draft Domestic Animal Management Plan 2026-2029 (DAMP),” Cr Makin said.

“The DAMP will explain how we will improve management of dogs and cats in our community over the next four years.

“It outlines things like how to deal with issues such as barking dogs, roaming animals, and how our Local Laws officers work with animal shelters, vet clinics, and pet businesses.

“It will identify how we encourage responsible pet ownership, such as registration, microchipping, desexing, and what training or extra resources our local laws officers might need to ensure the best outcomes for cats and dogs, their owners and the community.”

Cr Makin said the 2021-2025 DAMP had led to some really good results.

“Through a State Government grant in 2024-2025 we were able to deliver the cat desexing program that covered free desexing, microchipping and first year registration for concession card holders.

“Council entered into agreements with three additional shelter and rescue contacts so more stray and surrendered animals could be rehomed.

“It also attracted more participants in the cat trapping program to control stray and feral cat overpopulation.

“All of this has led to a safer community and happier healthier animals.”

Cr Makin encouraged residents to fill in the survey at conversations.corangamite.vic.gov.au/damp-26-29. It will open on Tuesday 14 October and close on Monday 11 November.

Feedback will be considered when developing the plan, which will be presented for adoption at the November Council meeting.
