Council welcomes bipartisan support for Skipton hub

Corangamite Shire Council has welcomed funding commitments from both major parties to make the Skipton Community Hub a reality.
Mt Emu Ward Councillor Nick Cole thanked both parties for their support for a valuable community asset.
“Redeveloping the worn-out recreation reserve into a modern facility will make Skipton a stronger, more resilient community,” Cr Makin said.
“Skipton has really been hit hard over the years with fires and floods and the Football Netball Club has been central to community wellbeing.
“It’s been a relief centre during emergencies but the facilities are really not up to scratch when there’s that level of demand.
“During disaster recovery, it’s where people go to connect socials. It really is an essential place for community wellbeing and needs to meet modern compliance and standards.
“The redevelopment will safer and more accessible, and enable a wider range of events.”
Mayor Kate Makin welcomed the funding commitments and said Council had been advocating for funding for a number of years.
At its June meeting Council endorsed three priority infrastructure projects for which it would seek funding commitments from both sides of politics: the Skipton Community and Recreation Hub – Stage 1, Camperdown Production Precinct – Stage 1 and 2, and Port Campbell to Princetown Trail Planning.
“Council has committed $300,000 and the community a further $150,000 which shows how important this project is to the town and surrounding district.
“At 40 years old it’s well past its use-by date. There are no changerooms for women. The men’s rooms are dilapidated.
“Rural communities need adequate facilities that are fit for purpose and this is making sure that can happen. The redevelopment is being community-led so the locals have more ownership over the project.
“Safety, wellbeing, economy - it’s all connected. A stronger club means a stronger town.”
