Corangamite Shire Council has welcomed the addition of six-carriage VLocity trains to some Warrnambool Line services.
V/Line this week announced the longer trains will run on selected high-demand Friday and weekend services in coming months.
Mayor Kate Makin said the upgrade from three-carriage trains was a significant win for communities across south west Victoria.
“This has been a key advocacy priority of the South West Victoria Alliance and something Corangamite Shire Council has also consistently called for.
“We are very pleased to see V/Line has listened to the voices of our region and responded to the strong growth in patronage on the Warrnambool line.
“Improving rail connectivity is critical for our residents, businesses, students and visitors.
“The commencement of six-carriage services demonstrates that advocacy can deliver real outcomes when local communities and councils work together.
“We would like to eventually see the increased capacity on all Warrnambool line services, but this is a fantastic start and an important milestone that will provide immediate benefits.
“This is a great outcome for the region and in particular residents of Corangamite Shire.”
Passenger numbers have increased significantly since the State Government capped regional train fares at the same price as metropolitan daily fares in 2023.
