Community invited to shine light on their cause

Community organisations with a presence in Corangamite are invited to light up the Camperdown Clocktower for their particular day of significance.

Applications to light the clocktower will be considered based on the organisations’ contribution to the vibrancy and creativity of the region and enhancement of community life.

So far this year it has been lit up

  • blue on 8 May for Do it for Dolly Day, in recognition of the Dolly's Dream initiative to prevent bullying;
  • red on 18 and 19 May for National Volunteers Week, to thank volunteers across Corangamite Shire for difference they make, often quietly and without recognition;
  • ·orange on 20 May for Wear Orange Wednesday, thanking SES volunteers
  • blue on 26 May in honour of the late Neale Daniher AO and his campaign to raise awareness of Motor Neurone Disease
  • pink and green from 27 May - 3 June for National Reconciliation Week, to celebrate our shared histories cultures and achievements.
  • red on 30 May for World MS Day, to raise awareness of multiple sclerosis, highlighting the barriers many people face and the importance of early diagnosis
  • purple on 17 June for National Police Legacy Day, in gratitude and respect of the dedication and sacrifice of police officers and their families an
  • red from 5-12 July through NAIDIC Week to honour First Nations histories, cultures and resilience.

In October, the clocktower will be lit pink for Breast Cancer Month and blue and yellow for the 50th anniversary of Probus in Australia.

Corangamite Shire Mayor Kate Makin said Council had formalised a set of guidelines for how the lights can best used to support our community.

“It’s a great way to contribute to the vibrancy and creativity of the region.

“Requests to light up public buildings can be submitted to Council and will be considered against a number of criteria to make sure they reflect our community’s values.

“The intention is to support community groups, not to advance any individual or business.

“Requests an organisation or registered not-for-profit organisation at least 31 days before the requested light-up date.

Submissions must explain how the proposed colour and lighting:

  • promotes respect for all
  • is consistent with Council’s values and policies
  • engages with the community
  • embraces a sense of belonging and enhances community life
  • aligns and furthers the requesting organisations values

Cr Makin said approvals would be for one-off events or campaigns lasting from one night up to a maximum one month.

“Because the lights are low energy, they are an environmentally friendly way to make a big impact with low carbon emissions.”
