Community invited to comment on draft Port Campbell parking review

Council is seeking community feedback to improve access to existing parking in the Port Campbell and improve traffic and pedestrian safety.

Corangamite Shire Council engaged specialist Traffix Group to review parking in the town and develop the Port Campbell Parking Review.

Mayor Kate Makin said that the draft parking review is now available on Council’s website and encouraged people to read the draft and join the conversation.

“The review included parking surveys conducted in December and January to assess parking availability, length of stay and traffic volume. The draft review also considers responses to the community survey on parking held in March.

“It’s no secret that public car parking is under pressure at peak tourism times.

“The parking surveys showed that long-stay parking in high-demand locations limits the availability and turnover of parking”

“We often seen inappropriate parking behaviours, such as parking on footpaths and long vehicles parking across multiple parks”.

Cooriemungle Ward Councillor Jamie Vogels said: “The draft review includes several recommendations to improve parking accessibility and safety in the town.

“We are seeking community feedback on the recommendations before Council makes any decisions.

“While parking restrictions are recommended in some areas, parking fees are not being proposed.

“Following consideration of community feedback, a final report will be presented to Council for consideration.”

RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • Time-restricted parking controls: Introduce 2P limits on Lord Street (with dedicated half-hour spaces near the supermarket) and seasonal 4P parking near the foreshore.
  • Parking layout improvements: Reconfigure the Cairns Street foreshore parking to wider (2.6m) spaces and engage with GORCAPA about widening central bays in the Fisherman’s Car Park.
  • Bus provisions: Consider the provision of short-term bus parking spaces on Tregea Street and Cairns Street for pick-up and drop-off
  • Continue discussions with Department Transport and Planning around provision of permanent bus stop infrastructure on Lord Street.
  • Loading zones: Introduce a weekday loading zone on Lord Street.
  • Long vehicle management: Introduce dedicated caravan and long-vehicle parking on Morris St and Lord St, east of Morris St, and install ‘No Trucks’ signs at either end of Lord St.
  • Compliance and enforcement: Conduct parking enforcement activities
  • Signage & line marking: Install signs and improve line marking in no stopping areas.
