Corangamite Shire Council has unveiled its Positive Ageing, Accessibility and Inclusion Plan 2025–2029 to help build a more inclusive and connected community.

Mayor Kate Makin said the plan is designed to empower our senior residents and people with a disability to live healthier, happier, and more engaged lives.

“With nearly half of Corangamite’s population aged 55 and over by 2031, the Plan recognises the vital role these residents play in shaping our Shire’s social and economic fabric.

“There are four key areas to focus on: Information & Communication, Transport & Accessibility, Community Connection, and Health & Wellbeing.

“The Plan outlines practical actions that will benefit everyone.

“Some of the initiatives include more mobility scooter charging points, better access to public spaces, and supporting residents to share information with each other.

“Council will also host more inclusive events and promote intergenerational programs. That’s something we’ve been doing with the Timboon fashion parade and Christmas in July and it has been very well received.

“After extensive community consultation, the plan reflects the real needs and aspirations of our residents. We thank everyone who contributed.

“Greater provision of public transport and greater access to health services are at the top of the list for our community and Council will continue to advocate to other levels of government to improve those services.”

Cr Makin said the plan was guided by principles of respect, empowerment, and pragmatism.

“It builds on local strengths and existing resources, and aligns with the Community Vision 2040 and legislative requirements under the Victorian Disability Act 2006.

Council will monitor progress annually, with community voices playing a central role in shaping outcomes.

“This Plan is not just a policy. It’s a promise to create a Shire where everyone can thrive, participate, and feel valued,” Cr Makin said.
