Camperdown’s much anticipated Robert Burns Scottish Festival commences this weekend with a number of events sure to capture a variety of interests.
A family Scottish dance at the Theatre Royal will see many kick up their heels to start the festival to music from the renowned Chris Duncan and Catherine Strutt who as always promise to be very entertaining.
Festival committee member and Councillor Ruth Gstrein encouraged the community to support the festival as there was sure to be something for everyone.
“The Court House concerts are always very popular and provide an intimate setting to appreciate the artists up close,” Cr. Gstrein said.
“A moving tribute to Danny Spooner is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at the Court House followed by further music from artists Fiona Ross and Platform 9 ¾,” she said.
The weekend will close on the Sunday with the stirring Finale Concert featuring headline artists Siobhan Owen, Chris Duncan & Catherine Strutt and Fiona Ross along with perennial favourites Warrnambool Pipes and Drums and Melbourne Scottish Fiddle Club.
Cr. Gstrein also praised the calibre of speakers presenting a number of topics during the lecture series.
“To have the talent of Len Murray, who is regarded as one of the foremost speakers on Robert Burns, presenting on the Saturday afternoon in the Old Council Chambers on ‘Why all the fuss about Burns?’ will be a session not to miss.
“Tickets for all events including the lecture series and the Court House concerts are available from Council offices and are very reasonably priced for the quality of entertainment on offer this year,” she said.
Free concerts at both the Commercial and Hampden Hotels are another opportunity for attendees to enjoy intimate performances by a number of artists at the festival including The Drowsy Maggies, John McAuslan and Duck Duck Goose.
