Corangamite Shire is preparing an Agricultural Strategy. The Grow Corangamite: Sustaining our Agricultural Future project will provide:

  • A comprehensive understanding of the physical, social and economic attributes that underpin agriculture and the challenges and opportunities confronting the industry
  • An economic development and planning framework to support and grow agriculture into the future.

We have compiled a Background Report and Timber Plantation Discussion Paper to identify a number of challenges that are facing the agricultural sector. External pressures include the impacts of climate change on weather patterns, fluctuations in international markets (and trade conditions), inflationary cost pressures, and changing consumer preferences. While more local challenges include gradual population decline, changing regulatory requirements, access to skilled labour and agricultural land coming under threat from competing rural land uses such as housing, timber production and renewable energy. Policy and economic decision-making can influence prospects.

The Background Report is one of the first stages of the project and it will be used to inform the development of the Agricultural Strategy. We are interested in your opinions on the issues, threats and opportunities facing the agricultural sector in Corangamite, to inform the analysis and background work undertaken.

We invite you to read the Grow Corangamite: Background Report and the Timber Plantation Discussion Paper and provide feedback via the online surveys below.

Submissions close Monday 27 May.
