News>Become a Weed Warrior!
| November is the month to head out into the garden and get rid of weeds that have the potential to spread to surrounding bushland.
Corangamite Shire’s Environment Officer, Jileena Baensch said weeds were one of the most serious threats to the natural environment and primary production industries. “Weeds have major economic, environmental and social impacts, causing damage to natural landscapes, agricultural lands, waterways and coastal areas,” she said.
Ms Baensch encouraged all residents to familiarise themselves with local weeds. “It’s important for people to recognise invasive weeds in their gardens and remove them to stop them from spreading.”
“Some of the worst weeds found in our native bushland have escaped from gardens, like Agapanthus and Arum Lilies,” she added.
Corangamite Shire’s Environment Team will be out and about during November, offering information on weed identification, control and management, as well as kids’ activities and free giveaways.
Children up to the age of 10 can also enter a Weeds Colouring In Competition and go into the draw to win a fantastic prize. Entries will be collected during November, with entry forms available at the Civic Centre, through the link below or from the Corangamite Shire display at the following events:
