| Making Corangamite Shire a healthier community and great place to live is the focus of a Draft Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan, now available for public comment.
Corangamite Shire Manager of Community Services, Helen Durant said the Plan would provide Council with a guide to promote maximum health and wellbeing for residents over the next four years. “The Plan identifies ways that local government can work with the whole community to promote the health and wellbeing of all of its residents.”
“We consulted with a range of community groups, service providers and residents to find out any barriers to health and wellbeing,” she added.
“The good news is that Corangamite has higher levels of wellbeing than the state average.”
“There is a strong sense of community and our volunteering levels are high, which is a good sign of community strength and wellbeing.”
However, Ms Durant said there were areas that needed attention. “In particular, we need to address issues such as access to nutritious food, transport links, the rate of drug and alcohol consumption, obesity and low levels of physical activity.”
“The Plan identifies all of these barriers and those identified by the community, and outlines ways to address these.”
“Providing opportunities such as the BRICKs program for young people, along with essential services for older residents will continue to be really important.”
“But it’s also about how we can work in partnership with other organisations and the community to address the identified issues and make a real difference to the health and wellbeing of our residents,” she added.
Ms Durant encouraged residents to have their say on the draft Plan.
Corangamite Shire’s Draft Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan is now available for public comment. Copies of the draft Plan are available at the Civic Centre or online at www.corangamite.vic.gov.au. Submissions close Monday 9 November 2009.
